Cooking Moroccan: introducing the best Moroccan Cooking Classes
Cooking Moroccan: introducing the best Cooking Classes
As I often say the key to any
culture is often through its cuisine. This is really the case with Morocco,
which has managed to create one of the very best cuisines in the world. This
is due to the numerous cultural influences and changes which have also
shaped the country’s history. Now, let’s head on to talking about the
phenomenon of a cooking course or a cooking class.
Cooking classes:
Cooking classes have become an
overly popular social activity. That’s exactly why the cooking class has become
one of the most popular activities, when it comes to group gatherings, group
activities and Human Resources also often choose cooking classes when it comes
to creating or enforcing a group spirit within a company group.
Cooking class has also become a
very popular tourist activity. It’s especially popular for all those, who would
like to do something creative during their holidays and for sure, it’s popular
among those who love to eat and love to cook. Cooking is definitely a fun
activity. And as it’s not a must-do household activity like it used to be, it’s
now becoming a great choice of a hobby.
Cooking classes are nowadays
offered next to art classes for all those, who would be traveling alone, but
who would certainly look for a group activity, which is also extremely useful
for learning about a country’s culture, traditions, habits, and history.
Moroccan Cooking classes:
Moroccan cooking classes are just
becoming a cool program for all those, who would love to join a group and
do something creative while learning at the same time.
Now, cooking is far from being
merely a hobby in Morocco, where each household still cooks on a daily basis.
This is why, cooking is a natural family activity that is often done with the
participation of all the family members, relatives, and friends, depending on
the occasion. This is why, the large majority of people, even men learn a lot
about cooking and knows how to cook most of the basic meals. If one is so lucky
to live in a Moroccan household, they have hands-on experience in learning
how to prepare some of the basic meals.
In this chapter, I would like to introduce
you to some of the best places I’ve managed to find, who offer cooking courses
and who I find legit enough to write about.
Moroccan cuisine is so much more than Couscous. |
Regional cuisine:
Many of the regions in Morocco
have their own cuisine mainly based on
the ingredients to be found in that specific region. This is why, cuisine in
Tanger tends to be closer to the fish-based Mediterranean cuisine, while
the cooking habits of Marrakesh or Fez are mostly based on chicken or lamb. The
cuisine of the mountain tribes is highly based on the ancient basis of Berber
cuisine.
The best cuisine in Morocco:
no cooking class is complete without learning about all the great spices |
Despite the large size of the
country, there are two cities that are both held as the cultural hubs of the
country: Marrakech and Fez. These are also the two cities with the richest
cultural treasures and for sure count among the highest visited cities in
Morocco. This is also why, if you are looking for cooking classes, you are
likely to find them in these two cities. The best cooking classes are those,
who are teaching students about the most down to Earth recipes, those which are
actually really cooked on a daily basis by most households.
This being a relatively new
touristic area, there aren’t dozens of places offering cooking classes in
Morocco.
But I believe in those schools I’ve
managed to find and thanks to all the positive reviews they have received. I
personally never attended any cooking course as I had been so blessed to being
able to live in Moroccan households.
I believe attending a cooking
class doesn’t only widen your horizons about a culture, it also gives you a great chance to share knowledge with others and to make friends.
So, let’s get started!
As you can see by their name,
this company doesn’t only focus on cooking classes but also on food tours all around
Morocco. This is among the companies I tend to like the most. First of all, I m
glad they are offering cooking classes and food tours in Rabat which is one of
the most beautiful and yet understated cities in Morocco. What I also like is
that their prices are the most down to Earth that I’ve managed to find online.
By the sight of all the content people attending their classes and thanks to
their good quality website, I would say if you are looking for a cooking class
( 1 day only) this page should be your startup point. The other cool thing
about them is that they are offering cooking classes which are actually held in
family homes. This way, one gets the chance to see more of Moroccan daily life
and they also get to see how kitchens generally look like and work in Morocco.
Naturally, family classes are not good for many people. The company’s restaurant
and riad places classes are available in Marrakech, Fez, and Rabat. The company
also offers other tourist trips apart from their foodie tours.
The cooking classes start from
USD 40 per person which I find acceptable.
Classes offered in: Rabat, Fez,
Meknes, Marrakech, Tanger, Chefchaouen, and Essaouira.
This is the other website of my
choice for cooking classes I have finally thought to include. They also include
3-day cooking course. Although the majority of the dishes they offer to cook I
can surely confirm is not generally cooked by ordinary Moroccan households,
they look surely tasty and challenging to cook. The 3-day tour also includes
some walking, shopping, sightseeing in Marrakech.
You can also choose what sort of meal you would like to learn to cook. Interesting features include focusing
on Berber dishes and strangely on "Thai-Moroccan” dishes which is a concept I’ve
never hear of before. Their website is a little bit all over the place and them
don’t feature their prices, but contact them as they seem enthusiastic and
dedicated to teaching cooking.
Among all the cooking classes
offered online, this was the only one that certainly looks like a legit cooking
school by giving the exact information one needs in order to not feel completely
ripped off. The good quality website
would tell you where exactly the cooking classes are held ( in a fine quality
riad in Fés Medina) they would also offer recipes on their website. They have
an extensive photo gallery, which is always a good sign. They offer private and
group cooking classes, classes focusing on one cooking area solely, like baking
( which is a huge part of the everyday cuisine) and they also offer cooking
experience at local families. They also offer a Sephardic (Jewish) cooking
workshop. Unfortunately, they don’t offer multiple day-long cooking classes only
1-day classes. But, you can reserve multiple different classes for different
days if you feel like. The prices are undeniably high. But this also looks to
be the best quality cooking class in Fés.
This site offers tons of
different programs and tours apart from cooking but they feature some itineraries
and photos which clearly shows that their cooking classes do exist. And if so,
they can be a good and much cheaper alternative while still showing you real
authentic cooking methods, recipes, and meals. Their one-day cooking class also includes
walking in the huge Fés Souk while collecting fresh ingredients. The cooking
class is held in a riad. Their itinerary is fine and clear and definitely
inviting. Check it out if you want to spend a fun day in Fés with cooking. You
also have the chance to enroll in the other touristic adventures offered by the
company. I suggest you to always bargain and agree on all price to be paid well
in advance.
Remember, in Morocco you can be
alone or in a couple and can still manage to join in or book a private cooking
class for a good price if you want to. Visit these sites and let me know about
your own, personal experience in Morocco.
